St. Patrick’s Day is soon approaching. Who doesn’t love a parade and all the festivities with our loved ones, friends, and family? Celebrations will be everywhere! Just as luck would have it, even here in Lilburn, you will have several locations to choose from to sing to your heart’s content.

However, as with any holiday involving ever-flowing alcohol, there is a very real risk of danger to yourself and others for those who decide to get behind the wheel and drive. Unfortunately, this holiday is also one of the deadliest days to be on the road during the year.

In 2020, from March 16, to March 18, 36% of fatal motor vehicle accidents involved a drunk driver, according to the Department of Transportation. NHTSA reported 11,654 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes in 2020. On average, one person was killed in a drunk driving crash every 45 minutes in 2020.

This month’s Safety Zone will show some things to avoid. It will ensure your celebration doesn’t end in disaster!

St. Patrick's Day is a celebration honoring the life of the 5th-century patron saint of Ireland — Saint Patrick. The holiday originated in the 17th century and honors Irish culture with parades It’s packed with traditional Irish music and dance. Wearing green clothes or shamrocks is a must. Fast forward to 2024. This holiday has become one of the most popular events of the year with many establishments hosting events, parties, drink specials, and dancing until the wee morning hours.

There are many folks who like to go out on St. Patrick’s Day, drink some green beer and enjoy their favorite alcoholic drink. It’s important to remember that alcohol has implications for our safety, health, and well-being. There are many factors on how alcohol affects everyone differently. Some drinkers can have inhibitions reduced, leading them to take risks that would not normally happen.

The liver digests alcohol on average one drink an hour. Of course, other factors can affect the absorption rate, such as tolerance, percentage of body fat, and the kinds of food consumed before drinking. It’s important to have a plan before you go out and stick to the plan. Arrange for a designated driver or ride-share. Set a drinking limit. Pace yourself. Eat foods that can slow the absorption rate. Stay hydrated by drinking water. Don’t mix any medications with alcohol.

Friends need to keep themselves accountable to each other. If someone notices someone getting intoxicated, make sure they do not get behind the wheel and become an unfortunate, but preventable statistic. Call a cab or ride share for them.
There are many ride services available during these time. USE THEM!

Remember that it is never okay to drink and drive. Designate a sober driver or a call a ride service to get home safely. If you’re the designated driver, make sure you don’t drink so you can keep that promise of safety to yourself and your passengers.

Never ride in a vehicle with a driver who has been drinking. And lastly, contact your local law enforcement if you see and suspect a drunk driver on the road.

The Lilburn Police Department wishes you a SAFE and happy St. Patrick’s Day! Please don’t press your luck by drinking and driving!

Stay safe Lilburn!
