[ARCHIVED] Wynne-Russell House Holiday Happenings

The holiday season will be upon us before we know it, and that means the City of Lilburn will be aglow with holiday festivities. It’ll be no different at the Historic Wynne-Russell House.

“The holidays are always a special time of the year at the Wynne-Russell House,” said volunteer Teresa Czyz. “We do our best to celebrate Christmas’s past with our Candlelight History Tours and Holiday Open House. The tours certainly bring history to life as you walk through the home and experience what it would have been like living in the house during the 1800’s and early 1900’s.” And the Open House is a little more modern with Santa stopping by for a visit and our fabulous Bake Sale, which raises money for the upkeep of the house. We are truly fortunate to have this treasure in Lilburn for community activities.”

The Wynne-Russell House is the oldest historic home in Lilburn, and the city’s only historic property that is on the National Registry of Historic Places. Built in 1826, the Wynne-Russell House, is an example of the “Plantation Plain” architectural style of the upper Piedmont region. The interior floors, walls and fireplaces are original and largely untouched by modern finishing. The site also includes a family cemetery.

Educating the community motivates the volunteer corps. They oversee free history tours that are conducted once a month, from April to September. Private tours are provided as requested by the Lilburn Community Partnership (wynnerussellhouse.com), which manages and maintains the house on behalf of the City of Lilburn.

Much research has been done to pull together the stories of the pioneering families, Wynne and Russell. The house also contains a collection of vintage-era items reflect the house’s 200-year-old history.

Upcoming Holiday activities include:

  • Help decorate the house: Saturday, Nov. 16 from 9 am – 1 pm. Lunch provided.
  • Free Candlelight History Tours: Tuesday, Dec. 10 and Thursday, Dec. 12, first one at 6 p.m. and second one at 7 p.m.
  • Free Holiday Open House and Bake Sale: Saturday, Dec 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Visitors can purchase homemade baked goods or one-of-a-kind gifts from the Lilburn Arts Alliance. And the kiddies can visit Santa and tell him their wishes.
  • Finally, the house can be rented and it’s a great place to host a holiday party!

“With its period architecture and gorgeous seasonal decorations, these tours and open house events should be on your list of things to do this holiday season,” said Mayor Johnny Crist. “We are fortunate to have this treasure in our community.”
