More than two decades ago, Karen Lickay left Buenos Aires, Argentina, and moved to the United States. She credits her education - a bachelor’s degree in International Relations - for opening the doors to a new country, new real estate career (she’s a licensed Realtor) and a new life altogether.
Lickay and Cristian, her husband of nine years, live in Old Town, which makes her within walking distance to Lilburn Middle School, where she is a Platinum-level business partner. Her partnership and commitment to the school makes her our May “Citizen of the Month.”
“Lilburn Middle School is a very diverse school,” she said. “I believe that all children should have the same opportunities in education in order to learn how to participate fully in this nation. Student achievement can be positively impacted by not only faculty and parents, but community partnerships, too. If the community as a whole participates by making a monetary contribution or donating time, many kids will benefit.”
An international traveler, Lickay is fluent in English, Spanish and Italian. She loves Lilburn for its central location, low crime rate, good schools and sense of community. She enjoys walking her three dogs on the Greenway Trail, getting her hair done, dining, shopping and taking in concerts at City Park.
“I feel welcomed,” she said. “Being a minority can be a challenge sometimes, but not in Lilburn. I feel that our community really knows how to embrace diversity.”
