[ARCHIVED] September Citizen of the Month

Lydia Lim

A 6th-grade teacher at Lilburn Middle School has launched a club at her school that she hopes spreads like wildfire to other Gwinnett County campuses and beyond.

ESOL instructor Lydia Lim’s volunteerism with the Council of Youth Anti-Drug (COYAD) a national non-profit organization that provides drug prevention education and leadership training, led her to start a club at LMS. Its first meeting is set for Sept. 21. Another club at Starling Elementary has already hosted its first meeting.

COYAD is about youth drug-use prevention, education and leadership. The free program offers drug education, youth leadership training and career presentations by specialists, according to its website. It has a presence and youth network that touches 50 states.

Because of her local efforts, Lim is the city’s September Citizen of the Month.

“Our goal is to create COYAD clubs at each and every school,” Lim said. “We must educate students in the schools and also provide them leadership training they may not be able to do.”

When not in the classroom, Lim stays busy volunteering for COYAD. She, as well as her parents and Bella, her three-year-old French bulldog, reside in Lawrenceville.  She’s been a LMS teacher for four years.

”I look forward to seeing how the students become leaders and talk about drug prevention to their friends, families and community members,” she said.
