City of Lilburn to hold Special Election for Mayor and Council Post 4

For immediate release

January 14, 2020

LILBURN - Mayor Johnny Crist announced his resignation as mayor of the City of Lilburn effective March 1, 2020. Mayor Crist has served as a council member since 2008 and as mayor of the city since January 2012.

While in office, Mayor Crist led the city's rebranding and redevelopment efforts. The new Lilburn City Hall-Library building, major improvements at Lilburn City Park, and increased housing opportunities throughout the city are just a few examples of the progress that has occurred during his time as mayor. Under his leadership, downtown Lilburn is currently experiencing revitalization. The police department and municipal court facility is being relocated to open up opportunities for development in the downtown area, and current development plans include storefronts along Main Street. Mayor Crist's understanding of the importance of the arts is reflected in the city. He implemented several art installments, including a beautifully painted piano that guests can enjoy at Lilburn City Hall. He was instrumental in the formation of the Lilburn Arts Alliance and helped bring the award winning Lilburn Tunnel Bridge Mural to downtown Lilburn.

Mayor Crist's resignation came with the announcement of his plan to run for a seat in the Georgia House of Representatives in the May 2020 election.

Lilburn City Council Member and Mayor Pro-Tem Tim Dunn also announced his resignation effective March 1, 2020. Council member Dunn served on the Planning Commission for two years and has served on the Lilburn City Council since 2007. "I commend Mayor Crist for his leadership and vision during his tenure. We wish him well with future plans," said Council member Dunn. "I will take this opportunity to seek election as Lilburn's Mayor, to continue the realization of dreams we have formed together with Lilburn staff over the last decade."

A special election will be held on May 19, 2020 at Lilburn City Hall from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. to fill the vacancies in the offices of Mayor and Council Post 4. Lilburn City Hall is located at 340 Main Street, Lilburn, GA 30047. For more information about the special election, visit cityoflilburn.com or contact City Clerk Melissa Penate at 770-638-2226.
